Nicolas de Boer of the Lexington Partisans was on top of his game.

The 22-year-old tantalized the Ames Lake Jackalopes with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest, shutting them out, 4-0.

"He had the changeup working," Ames Lake manager said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."

The Lexington hurler had 4 strikeouts, gave up 2 walks and surrendered 4 hits in his complete-game effort.

de Boer told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."

"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.

de Boer has a 3-0 season record so far. In 6 starts, he has fanned 20 batters in 44 innings with a 1.02 ERA.
