The San Diego Destroyers got a sterling performance from pitcher Gary Banks, but the Portland Dragons still prevailed, 3-1. Banks threw 6.1 innings of shutout ball. The Dragons saw their win-loss record go to 27-33. At the same time, the Destroyers fell to 33-28.
Portland used the timely hitting of Ray Farr to seize the win. The pinch hitter stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Dragons on top, 2-1. It was his only hit in 1 at-bat, but it was a game-changer.
"Clutch hitting plus clutch pitching usually equals a win," said Farr.
