Phantoms Bridle Friars, 3-1
|
The Chicago Phantoms launched their 2079 campaign with a victory over the San Francisco Friars at Foster Field. Chicago second baseman Zach Gavula was instrumental in the 3-1 win. He was 3-4 with a home run and a double, while adding 3 RBI and scoring once. Rafael Escobar, who finished 4th in the WC in innings pitched with 211.0 last year, was the winning pitcher. Over 5.2 innings, he allowed no runs on 4 hits, with 3 walks and 8 strikeouts. Teh-huai Yap closed the door for Chicago, picking up his 1st save of the year.
With the game tied, 0-0, in the bottom of the fifth, Gavula had a key at-bat for Chicago. With runners on 1st and 3rd, Gavula hit a run-scoring single off Shaun Chugh, making the score 1-0, Phantoms.
Chicago manager Sam J praised his team's "businesslike approach."
