Win Goes to Avispas in Tight Contest
|
The performance of David Roman proved critical in helping Santiago beat Brooklyn, 8-6. The Avispas first baseman went 3 for 4 with a double, 2 singles, and a walk, while scoring 2 times. Arthur Gordon, credited with the win in relief, is now 4-2. He allowed no runs on 1 hit in 1.2 innings. Buddy Verveer was credited with the save. He has now successfully converted 4 of 9 save opportunities.
Santiago needed the clutch hitting of Melvin Meraz to seal the deal. The catcher swatted a grand slam home run in the top of the ninth inning to put the Avispas on top, 8-6. For the game, Meraz had 1 home run and 1 single in 5 at-bats.
"I don't care about style points," Meraz said. "I only care about winning."
The second-place Browns now sit at 32-28.
