Thunderbirds Shut Out Vikings, 2-0
|
In a low-scoring tilt between the Phoenix Thunderbirds and the Minneapolis Vikings, Matt Nyholm, who finished 3rd in the WC in wins with 17 in 2073, was the difference-maker. The Phoenix left-hander spearheaded the 2-0 win. Nyholm, now 1-0, was the winner. In 7.1 innings, he gave up 8 hits, while striking out 4, walking 0, and allowing no runs. Jason Reilly was credited with the save for Phoenix, his 1st of the season.
Victor Moroxio had a big solo home run for the Thunderbirds in the bottom of the fourth inning. With Phoenix leading 1-0 and the bases empty, he sized up a curveball from Richard Samayoa, who finished 3rd in the WC in innings pitched with 214.0 in 2069, and punished it. The result was his 2nd home run of the season, which put the Thunderbirds on top, 2-0.
"Matt made the big pitches when he needed to," said Phoenix manager Joe Busch.
The win has Phoenix at 4-1.
