Home Field Advantage: Merdinger, Los Angeles Open Conference Championship with Win

The rookie looked like he belonged out there.
The Los Angeles Stars sent 23-year-old right-hander Mike Merdinger to the mound today for a high-pressure playoff start and he repaid their confidence, quieting the Portland Dragons on a day where the Stars struggled to produce runs of their own. In the end, Los Angeles cobbled together enough to take the 2-1 decision. The win gave Los Angeles a 1-0 lead in the best-of-7 Conference Championship.
Eloy Laca hit a 2-run home run off Jesse Czaplicki in the bottom of the eighth, which put the Stars ahead, 2-0. In addition to the homer, Laca had 1 double, while going 2 for 4.
"It was just a matter of executing," said Los Angeles manager Pat Kaers.
The next game is set to be played tomorrow at Stars Ballpark in Los Angeles.
