The Chicago Phantoms rode a solid performance from 24-year-old starting pitcher John Liberty to a win, beating the Portland Dragons, 4-2, at Foster Field. Liberty, the winner, moves to 5-1. He threw 5 innings of 4-hit ball, while fanning 6 and giving up no walks. John Colon closed out the game, earning his 4th save.
The Phantoms got a big at-bat from right fielder Omar Santana. For the game, Santana went 1 for 3 with a home run. In the bottom of the third, with the bases empty, he stroked a solo home run. His 5th home run of the season gave Chicago a 1-0 lead.
Portland manager Greg Carpenter said he was "mildly disappointed" with the loss. "We had our opportunities, but we didn't take advantage of them," he said.
Chicago raised its record to 34-19 with the win.
