The Los Angeles Stars picked up a win at Ballpark of Missouri, dropping the Kansas City Athletics, 5-3. Corey LaCognata, who led the WC in strikeouts with 222 last year, was the difference-maker. Los Angeles pitcher Frank Calderon got the win. He's now 2-3. Kohsuke Yoshimoto was tagged with the loss. Melvin Suarez converted his 3rd save in 3 tries.
Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for Eloy Laca? The 2079 WC batting champion Laca stroked a bases-clearing double in the top of the ninth inning to put Los Angeles up, 5-3. For the game, he was 2 for 5, including 1 double and 1 single.
"The bar for us is not a particular opponent, it's ourselves," said Los Angeles manager Pat Kaers.
The second-place Stars have won 4 straight.
