The Phoenix Thunderbirds got a sterling performance from pitcher John Hersey, but the Portland Dragons still prevailed, 4-3. Hersey threw 6.0 innings of 4-hit ball. Eric Scherer snagged the win in relief. The right-hander allowed 1 run on 2 hits over 1.2 innings. He's now 1-0 on the season. The Thunderbirds, at 21-21, have lost 5 straight games.
Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for Ginjiro Muranaka? The former first round draft pick Muranaka stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh inning to put Portland up, 3-2. For the game, he was 2 for 4, including 1 double and 1 single.
After the game, Portland manager Greg Carpenter applauded the team's effort. "We put some good AB's together," he said.
