Senators Win Close Shave, 5-4
|
The Washington Senators had to overcome a fine effort from Cincinnati pitcher Beau Eschmann to win, 5-4, at Cincinnati Grounds. Eschmann went 7.1 innings and allowed no runs. Washington reliever Julio Mendoza picked up the win, raising his record to 6-7. Ernie Martinez was tagged with the loss. Johnny Wickwire sewed up the save, his 1st.
The game was at a stalemate until designated hitter Danny Mrazek came to bat in the top of the 11th. Facing Cincinnati pitcher Ernie Martinez, he hit a 1-0 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Washington on top, 4-3.
"We earned that one," said Mrazek.
With the victory, the Senators record stands at 59-86.
