Markosiants Hits 2 Roundtrippers, Friars Win, 8-6
|
The San Francisco Friars powered past the Kansas City Athletics, 8-6, at Staples Field. Lyalya Markosiants provided some of the pop. The Natural was 3 for 3 with 2 home runs, a double, and a walk, while scoring 3 times and driving in 4. John Smallwood, the winning pitcher, is now 5-1. He went 5 innings, allowing 5 runs on 6 hits, while fanning 1 and walking 3. O-min Che recorded the save for San Francisco, his 11th of the season.
Chris Neri had a big 2-run double for the Friars in the bottom of the second inning. With San Francisco trailing 3-2 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he got a fastball from Arturo Covarrubias, who leads the WC in innings pitched with 156.2, and swatted a double to right-center. It was his 35th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Friars ahead, 4-3.
"You can't get too high when things go well, or too low when things go bad. Right now, I'm just happy we got the win," Neri told the San Francisco Daily News.
San Francisco, at 62-57, holds down second place in the Western Conference Felipe Solorzo Division.
