The San Francisco Friars knocked off the Phoenix Thunderbirds, 4-3, in Western Conference action at Staples Field. San Francisco pitcher and Redland, Maryland, native Cruz Ponce had an outstanding performance. Roger Calzada got the save, the 9th for him this season. With the win, San Francisco upped its record to 23-14.
Chris Neri, who finished 3rd in the WC in doubles with 46 last year, chipped in a 2-run home run for San Francisco in the bottom of the fifth. For the game, the designated hitter had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1 run scored, and 2 RBI.
"Cruz was pounding the zone," said San Francisco manager Jeremy Cooan.
