The Phoenix Thunderbirds topped the Tucson Toros, 5-3, in Western Conference action at Legednary Park. The standout performance belonged to Phoenix pitcher and Medfield, Massachusetts, native John Hersey. Jimmy Hsia was credited with the save for Phoenix, his 1st of the season. The win gives Phoenix a record of 1-1.

Phoenix took a 3-2 lead on Jesus Ariza's 1st home run of the season. The 2-run home run, which Ariza hit in the bottom of the seventh, left Tucson pitcher O-min Che visibly frustrated.

"We were the better team," crowed Ariza.
