Angels Hope Opening Day Win Bodes Well for Season
|
Crowds lined up early in front of Foster Field, eagerly awaiting the start of the 2078 Rising Star League season. On the mound was John Rochford for the visiting San Antonio Angels and Rafael Escobar for the hometown Chicago Phantoms. In a spirited contest, the Angels pulled out the win, defeating the Phantoms by the score of 4-3. Especially impressive was Matt Smookler. John Rochford picked up the win with 5 innings of work. He allowed 1 run on 5 hits, while walking 4 and striking out 5. On the season, he is now 1-0.
Who knows how it might've ended, had it not been for Ricky Rangel? The San Antonio third baseman had a 2-run single in the top of the second inning to put the Angels on top, 2-0. For the game, Rangel had 1 double and 1 single in 4 at-bats.
"We had the game right there for the taking," said Chicago manager Sam J. "But we decided not to take it."
