Glaciers Pull Out Late-Game Win, 6-5
|
Despite the exploits of designated hitter Joaquin Yanqui, the Phoenix Thunderbirds were beaten by the Denver Glaciers, 6-5, in 19 innings. Yanqui was 5-8 with a home run, 2 doubles, 2 singles, and 2 walks, while scoring 2 runs and driving in 3. Francisco Sequeira earned the win after being summoned from the bullpen. The right-hander allowed 2 runs on 8 hits in 3.1 innings. He upped his record to 6-0. Ringo Pineiro was credited with the save for Denver, his 1st of the season.
Denver used a timely hit from John Eby to get the win. The shortstop stroked a run-scoring double in the top of the 18th inning to put the Glaciers ahead, 4-3. It was his only hit in 7 at-bats, but it made an impact.
"You play a lot of one-run games," said Denver skipper Todd Bleess, "and it seems there's one play somewhere in there that changes the game."
The triumph puts Denver at 68-39 for the season.
