Friars Win Squeaker, 2-1, Over Lobster
|
The San Francisco Friars downed the Maine Lobster, 2-1, at Staples Field. Stellar pitching by Kelvin Vaquera had a lot to do with it. The right-hander, who is tied for 2nd in the WC in innings pitched with 119.0, handcuffed his opponent all game. The win was credited to 28-year old right-handed pitcher Cruz Ponce in relief. His record improves to 2-2. Mike Pechtel took the loss. The third-place Friars have won 5 consecutive games.
A defensive lapse proved costly in the contest. In the bottom of the eighth, with the game tied, Bob Buell was at the plate when San Francisco scored 1 on an error. The miscue enabled the Friars to go in front, 2-1.
"The vibe's good," said San Francisco manager Erich Weatherholt. "We've got to keep it going."
