Phoenix Starter August's Best Pitcher Friday, September 1st , 2084 The Phoenix Thunderbirds celebrated today after the news filtered through the clubhouse that Carlos Torres had been selected as August's Western Conference Pitcher of the Month. Torres's zest for the game has been a frequent topic on the sports pages and his numbers of late have made his fans even more enthusiastic. "Our coaching staff really helps me prepare well," Torres said, "and the fans feed off good pitching. Your pitches just seem to have that extra pop to them when the fans are behind you and you feel confident you can get outs." Torres tossed 32.2 innings last month, holding opponents to a .170 average while striking out 17 batters. In 5 starting assignments he came away with a 5-0 record, putting together an ERA of 1.38. Torres has started 27 times this year, pitched 160.2 innings, fanned 112 batters and walked 89. His current record is 11 wins and 9 losses with a 3.30 ERA. |
