Win Lifts Thunderbirds to 33-23
|
The Phoenix Thunderbirds beat the Tucson Toros, 5-3. Phoenix pitcher and Baltimore, Maryland, native Earl Starr led the way. Ko Morita recorded his 7th save for Phoenix. At 33-23, the Thunderbirds claim second place in the Western Conference Najera Division.
Robin Stevens had a big 2-run double for the Thunderbirds in the bottom of the first inning. With Phoenix leading 1-0 and runners on 2nd and 3rd, he got a fastball from Miguel Moquete, who is tied for 2nd in the WC with a 1.01 WHIP, and swatted a double to left. It was his 5th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Thunderbirds ahead, 3-0.
Phoenix manager Joe Busch said his team played a "no nonsense" game.
