Montreal got a terrific performance from pitcher Marcos Sordia, but it wasn't enough to beat the Santiago Avispas. Santiago won the Estadio Guillermón Moncada contest, 5-3. Sordia threw 7.0 innings of 4-hit ball for the losing team. Santiago reliever Steve Zuehlke got the win, raising his record to 1-0. Alex Esquibel was tagged with the loss. With the loss, Montreal is 1-4.

The game was at a stalemate until first baseman Kas Broekhuizen came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Montreal pitcher Jorge Baeza, he hit a first pitch fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Santiago on top, 4-3.

"We're playing like we're capable of," said Santiago manager Jacob Pauly.
