Kodiaks Drop Friars, 5-3
|
The Alaska Kodiaks defeated the San Francisco Friars, 5-3, at Staples Field. Shigenobu Shimamoto, who finished 3rd in the WC in home runs with 39 in 2071, was a standout performer for Alaska. His 4 hits included 3 singles and 1 double -- this in addition to the 1 run he scored and 1 he knocked in. Carlos Torres got the win, improving to 2-4. He worked 6 innings, giving up 2 runs on 4 hits, while striking out 3 and walking 3. The Kodiaks improved their record to 24-25 by beating San Francisco.
Marc Sanders dealt the Friars a blow in the top of the ninth. Batting with the bases loaded and Alaska leading 4-3, Sanders hit a first pitch fastball for a run-scoring single.
Alaska manager Alex King commended his team for "doing what it takes to win."
