Thunderbirds Defeat Friars, 9-5
|
The Phoenix Thunderbirds racked up a win at Staples Field, bumping off the San Francisco Friars, 9-5, in 14 innings. Julio Carpinteyro, who started for Phoenix, pitched effectively for his team. Phoenix reliever Alexis Cosme was credited with the win. His record goes to 2-2. John Smallwood took the loss for San Francisco. The Thunderbirds are now 14-22.
Billy Buelna went 1 for 7 with a double for Phoenix. The 27-year old second baseman had a key at-bat in the top of the 14th. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, he broke a 5-5 tie with a run-scoring ground out off Jose Alonzo. It was his 19th RBI of the season.
"Baseball is such a beautiful game," said Buelna. "Anything can happen on any night, and that's why you don't dwell on what happened yesterday. Just look forward and trust you're going to have positive results."
