Avispas Edge Past Toros, 6-5
|
Due in large part to shortstop Jonathan Villegas, the Santiago Avispas sunk the Tucson Toros, 6-5. Villegas went 3 for 3 with 3 singles and a walk. Steve Zuehlke came out of the bullpen to earn the win. The right-hander allowed 1 run on 2 hits in 1.2 innings. His record now stands at 1-0. The defeat makes the Toros 6-14.
The game was at a stalemate until third baseman Terry van de Belt came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Tucson pitcher Kurt Bozek, he hit a 1-1 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Santiago on top, 5-4.
"We'll pop the top on a cold beverage and get back to work tomorrow," van de Belt said.
