Gaedels Stumble, Fall to Spectres, 3-1
|
The Philadelphia Spectres downed the St. Louis Gaedels, 3-1, at Veeck Park. Stellar pitching by John Guzik had a lot to do with it. The right-hander, the 2nd overall pick in the 2080 draft, handcuffed his opponent all game. Guzik got the win, improving to 1-0. He gave up 6 hits and walked 2 over 6 innings. He allowed 1 run. John Frye earned the save for Philadelphia.
Philadelphia used the timely hitting of Jeff O'Donnell to seize the win. The shortstop stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the eighth inning to put the Spectres on top, 3-1. It was his only hit in 3 at-bats, but it was a game-changer.
"Whenever we hold the other team to one run," said Spectres manager Ryan Huff, "I like our chances."
The Gaedels, at 4-11, have stumbled out of the gate.
