Arrows Score Late, Topple Thunderbirds, 5-3
|
The Phoenix Thunderbirds got a superb performance from pitcher Hector Ortiz, but the Seattle Arrows still won the game, 5-3. Ortiz threw 6.0 innings of 2-hit ball. Seattle reliever Garrett Gutierrez picked up the win to move to 8-4. Cesar Lobatos suffered the loss. The win gives Seattle a season record of 49-48.
The game was at a stalemate until shortstop Matthew Allen came to bat in the bottom of the eighth. Facing Phoenix pitcher Sumiki Kono, he hit a 1-0 fastball for a run-scoring single. It was a game-changer, putting Seattle on top, 4-3.
Allen attributed the win to his team's "grittiness."
