The Phoenix Thunderbirds could not turn a fine performance from pitcher Ernesto Alvarez into a win. Instead, the Houston Aquas prevailed, 6-5, in 12 innings. Alvarez threw 7.2 innings of 4-hit ball. Victor Wix snagged the win in relief. He goes to 1-0 on the season. Bernd Miller suffered the loss. The win puts Houston at 5-4.

Who knows how it would've ended, had it not been for Al Anzaldua? The 29-year old second baseman Anzaldua stroked a run-scoring single in the top of the 12th inning to put Houston up, 6-5. For the game, he was 3 for 6, including 2 doubles and 1 single.

"Winning never gets dull," said Anzaldua.
