Espiricueta Shines in 6-0 Gem
|
The New York Titans had no answer for St. Louis Gaedels pitcher Luis Espiricueta. They failed to score a single run against him, losing, 6-0. New York managed only 1 hit off Espiricueta, who had 5 strikeouts.
The extraordinarily popular Espiricueta got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd.
"Gaedels fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances, but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible."
Checking out his stats for the season, Espiricueta has racked up 2 wins and 5 losses in 12 starts, posted a 3.39 ERA, and struck out 59 batters in 71.2 innings.
