The San Diego Destroyers got their 2085 season off and running with a win over the Seattle Arrows at Seaward Stadium. The final score was 3-1. San Diego pitcher Ricardo Guajardo, in particular, had a fine performance. The winner was Guajardo. He threw 7.0 innings of 5-hit ball. The loser was Alex Zapien.
Heyg Schmidt had a big run-scoring triple for the Destroyers in the bottom of the fourth inning. With San Diego leading 1-0 and a runner on 1st, he got a sinker from 23-year old right-handed pitcher Alex Zapien and swatted a triple to right. It was his 1st triple of the season, and more importantly, it put the Destroyers ahead, 2-0.
Guajardo called the win the result of "everyone being in sync."
